Setting up the perfect AdWords campaign is a long process that involves hours and hours of keyword research and brainstorming to get right, and even then there is always the constant monitoring and changes needed to be updated so you can get the most out of what you are trying to achieve from your campaign.

Something that not everyone considers or thinks about when setting up a campaign is a negative keyword list.

Negative keywords should be an important part of all AdWords campaigns; sadly they are not. They are there to minimise the irrelevant impressions and clicks coming through to your website. An AdWords campaign not set up with them could potentially notice large amounts of impressions with a low amount of clicks and there is no guarantee that those people who have clicked through (costing you money) are searching for the service that you offer.

Before a keyword is placed in your next AdWords campaign you should consider adding the following as negative keywords.

  • free
  • cheap
  • nude
  • naked
  • sex
  • porn
  • porno
  • torrent
  • torrents
  • YouTube
  • Craigslist
  • eBay
  • Kijiji

The above keywords could potentially save you from appearing in heaps of irrelevant search results, but they are not the only keywords you should consider as adding as negatives.

Employment Search Keywords

Someone looking for a job might type in your service with the word ‘jobs’ or ‘salary’. Not having these words set up as negative keywords could potentially make your ad display in these searches and if clicked on then you will need to pay for someone doing this search query.

Education Search Keywords

These keywords are often used in a search queries by users that are looking to learn about your service. Some negative keywords to consider if you do not want to appear in these queries are ‘training’ or ‘schools’.

Research & Information Search Keywords

This list is essential for anyone with an e-commerce website. Reduce the amount of window shoppers and tire kickers who click on your ads by adding these negative keywords.

Each and every business is unique so all businesses will have different target markets or services they offer, keeping on top of your campaign and constantly adding new negative keywords could be the difference between having great ROI, or wasting your daily budget before lunchtime with irrelevant clicks.
