The World that Loves to #Love
If you read our previous blog that looked back on the most talked about topics on social media this past year, you may have noticed a theme. Whilst we’re thrilled to see people utilising social media to promote social issues, we couldn’t help but notice the lack of uplifting news gracing the list. One of the more positive hashtags making the rounds this year was #LoveWins, coined by supporters of gay marriage and dominating our feeds with America’s Supreme Court ruling in favour of gay marriage earlier this year. So, driven by curiosity, we decided to explore the less publicised popular hashtags of ‘15, in search of the more fuzzy-feeling-inducing types – and we were surprised at what we found.
Digging up the less publicised words and phrases on the list sent us on a weird and wonderful journey. What shocked us the most was the revelation that #Love has topped the list for three years running, the hashtag used 82 million times by users when last we checked. With the word being thrown around to express love for a loved one, love for a new piece of clothing or another personal item, love for a pet, and more. The hashtag was even widely used to convey sarcasm.
Other hashtags that made the list included: #InstaGood, #ME, #TBT, #Cute, #PhotoOfTheDay, #InstaMood, #Beautiful, #PicOfTheDay and #Igers. So, what is it about #Love that we love so much? We all know that annoying couple whose feed is made up mostly of nauseatingly cute selfies, photos of them holding hands, of their feet facing each other’s etc. If you’re unable to relate, please refer to the following video that delves into the phenomena of the Instagram Husband. Yep, it’s a thing, and an epidemic, apparently. Other avid users of the hashtag include the infamous food-grammer, the cynical singleton, the fashion-grammer, and the dreaded Instagram-fame-hungry-grammer whose hashtags are excessive and we assume spends their time a little like this (ft. backing music by Nickelback for effect).
Nonetheless, let’s not take away from the fact that #Love taking the title over #InstaGood, #ME, #Cute, #PhotoOfTheDay and so forth, is a win for us all. Perhaps we should all follow the lead of the world’s loved up couples this Christmas, and spread the #Love.
Happy Christmas everyone, may the lines at the checkout be short and the eggnog plentiful!
