What is Website Hosting?

Website hosting is a service that ensures a website or page remains live on the internet. It is critical to have a website for modern marketing to build company reputations, branding, and to promote personal success. The technology for website hosting is supported by a web host provider and has the tools required for a webpage or site to be viewed online through a browser. These are hosted and stored on servers, which are computers specifically designed for this purpose. The host will create a web address so that the server can then access your webpage.

Hosting Options

Depending on the type of service you or your business demands, there are different types of options available which will suit your budget and website needs:

  1. Free Hosting

This is normally used for entry level web hosting. It is usually for personal website or small audience blogs. As well as other software limitations, your monetising options will be more limited, as the host company usually runs its own ads.

  1. Shared Hosting

This is where a server is shared with multiple users. You will have wider monetisation options and better administrative control. However, your site’s security can be compromised with sharing, there will be a smaller processing capacity, and software will be limited.

  1. Dedicated Server Hosting

If you are planning to attract a high level of traffic, this is the best option available. It is more robust than the shared and free hosts, and you will have far more options available for the use of software applications. You will, however, be responsible for your own maintenance and security, operating similarly to having your own in-house hosting environment.

  1. Managed Dedicated Server

This service will offer managed security updates with maximum efficiency. It usually comes with spam filtering, anti-virus scanning, risk auditing and other maintenance software. You are effectively renting a “space” with a maintenance contract attached. A managed dedicated server will control your storage, RAM, memory and RAID, and will be configured to meet your direct webpage needs.

  1. Cloud Hosting

This allows businesses to share advanced IT resources via a cloud or a supercharged virtual host like Hosting Australia. It is more cost effective as you do not need to purchase additional hardware or pay for specialised IT staff. It offers flexibility where you can either choose full or partial hosting, and can accommodate changes with resource requirements without interruption, thereby easily keeping up with changing customer demands.

  1. Clustered Hosting

This is where a host offers inactive servers to kick in when one server becomes off-line. It can be a group of dedicated servers, cloud servers, or even a combination of both. This can be an expensive option, but essential for high traffic websites that have an international customer base. While one server is down for maintenance, other servers can easily be assigned to take over. This does require more management and maintenance infrastructure, making it more expensive.
