Understanding SEO (in a Totally Non-Techy Way)
Sometimes SEO seems like the most confusing thing in the world! You could read about it all day, but its ever-changing nature means that most things you absorb will either be out of date, or just way too complicated to comprehend quickly.
It’s easy to look at SEO as something involving lots of intricate work, which only technicians and SEO experts can wrap their heads around, but it’s really quite simple when put in easy-to-understand terms.
Below are three analogies to describe SEO that even those most technologically-challenged will understand.
1. SEO is like high school (as depicted by Hollywood)
As films like Clueless, Mean Girls and Grease are famous for, every high school has its popular kids. These are the kids everyone wants to hang with; the kids people constantly try to impress, whose peers will do whatever they can to make them happy.
If you think of Google as being that golden popular kid, then SEO is everyone else trying their best to meet its requirements.
Google knows what it wants, and websites need to do everything in their power to make them happy. SEO is about always trying to win the popularity contest.
2. SEO is like chess
Like with any game, chess requires a lot of skill. Anyone can play to a certain degree, but the more knowledge and technique you have, the better you will be able to play.
This is the same with SEO. On face value, it may seem like just some simple optimisation, legible blogs and a few pictures are all you need to ‘win’. In reality, however, there is much more skill and tactic involved. Anyone can move the pieces, but it takes an expert to know how to really play the game and win.
3. SEO is like dating
I know, this sounds ridiculous, but it actually makes a lot of sense.
What criteria do you have before you start dating? Generally, you are looking for someone that appeals to you in terms of looks, personality, and all those other tickable boxes.
Here, we can think of Google as also playing the dating game. Google is always trying to find someone to fit its particular preferences. SEO is comparable to relationship building as Google is consistently looking for the right fit – that ‘soulmate’, so to speak. By ticking off the right criteria in the eyes of Google, you are setting yourself up with a potential life partner.
Hopefully this has given you an insight into a simpler (if slightly left of field) way of understanding SEO. Just remember, no one ever said dating was easy.
