How Can Your Business Make the Most of Footy Finals Fever?

Share on Facebook0Tweet about this on Twitter0Google+1Share on LinkedIn35Pin on Pinterest0Email to someone

September is fast approaching and Melburnians, South Aussies, Sydney-siders, Queenslanders and the population of Perth are getting excited about heading to the football to watch their team progress towards premiership glory.

All of this buzz makes it a perfect time for local businesses to go after their clients with a direct and targeted approach whilst representing their true colours. Social media is a powerful tool to use here as it allows you to target a specific group of people in a specific area, all at a granular level.

Emotional appeal is a cornerstone of marketing – use it to your advantage

Football is an emotional game and football supporters are a passionate bunch. When trying to increase brand awareness, market a new product or persuade that next client to buy, why not use the power of footy emotion?

A purchase is more likely when the potential buyer is acquainted or familiar with the product or the seller. Reach out and familiarise yourself with your potential clients through Facebook. Look at the winners and losers from the round just passed and approach these groups while they are on a high.

Let us set the scene…

Just picture the first round of finals. GWS topple the Mighty Hawks in a clash of the new up-and-coming young talent vs the benchmark of greatness over the last decade. Cyril at his usual miraculous best and Stevie J shining against his old foes. Despite a seven-goal haul from Gunston, the Hawks are toppled after the siren from a 50m kick on the boundary by Jeremy Cameron. The GWS faithful go WILD! Sydney is alight with orange, white and grey. The AFL community is stunned and delighted that the Hawks have stumbled at the first hurdle of their historic tilt at the ‘four-peat’.

Kicking business goals

After the dust settles, how can a business leverage this event? Who should they target? What is a business to do?

Simple – hone in on GWS supporters, GWS members, or in this particular case, everybody who is sick and tired of seeing the Hawks win the Premiership!

For instance, local businesses in Sydney can capitalise on the fever by posting the following marketing spiels to their social media pages:

  • Bring your GWS scarf and receive a free small coffee with any muffin purchase
  • Bring your Hawks scarf and receive a large coffee with your muffin purchase, because we know you’re still hurting…

Start cultivating business through a pre-established fan base

Competition brings out a different side to all of us. Leverage this side and capitalise on the most exciting time of the football year.
